What is a muslin blanket?

A muslin blanket is a lightweight, breathable blanket traditionally made from loosely woven cotton. The open weave gives muslin its characteristic airy feel, making it especially useful in warm weather and for babies.

Muslin can range from very thin, gauze-like fabric to somewhat heavier, multi-layer blankets.

Characteristics:

  • Lightweight: Much lighter than fleece, wool, or many conventional cotton blankets.

  • Breathable: The loose weave allows air to circulate.

  • Softens with washing: Cotton muslin generally becomes softer and more comfortable over time.

  • Absorbent: Cotton can absorb moisture, although a muslin blanket isn't necessarily intended to function as a towel.

  • Quick-drying: Its thin construction generally allows it to dry faster than thick blankets.

  • Flexible: It can be used as a blanket, cover, nursing cover, stroller cover, swaddle, or lightweight throw.

  • Wrinkles easily: The relaxed, textured appearance is part of the appeal for many people.

Layers of muslin blankets

Single-layer muslin

One layer of loosely woven fabric.

Advantages:

  • Extremely lightweight

  • Very breathable

  • Dries quickly

  • Excellent for hot weather

Double-layer muslin

Two layers are constructed together.

This provides a little more insulation while retaining much of muslin's breathability.

Good for: year-round use, mild temperatures, babies, and lightweight bedding.

Multi-layer muslin

Some blankets use three, four, six, or even more layers of muslin.

The additional layers make the blanket considerably more substantial while maintaining an airy texture.

Benefits of muslin blankets

  • Excellent breathability

This is probably their biggest advantage.  The open weave allows heat and moisture to escape more readily than many dense fabrics.

  • Great for warm weather

They're particularly useful when you want a layer over yourself without feeling wrapped in something heavy.

  • Lightweight

They're easy to carry around, pack for travel, and store.

  • Softens over time

Good cotton muslin can become exceptionally soft after repeated washing.

  •  Versatile

A large muslin blanket can have many uses beyond simply covering yourself.

  • Easy to layer

Instead of buying one extremely thick blanket, you can use several breathable layers and adjust them according to temperature.

  • Attractive texture

Muslin often has a relaxed, slightly crinkled appearance that gives it a casual, natural aesthetic.

How to wash muslin blankets

Washing

  • Use a gentle or normal cycle according to the care label.

  • Wash with similar colors.

  • Avoid overloading the machine.

  • Use a mild detergent.

  • Avoid excessive heat.

Drying

Air drying is generally gentlest.  If using a dryer:

  • Use low or medium heat.

  • Remove promptly.

  • Avoid very high temperatures.
